Starting Over? It's Not Possible...

What do you think about this?.. Take a minute and read this and let me know what you think. Thanks...

Wipe the slate clean? Start fresh? Forgive and forget? Sounds nice and we’d like to think it’s true- but the truth is that there is no such thing as starting over, starting new, starting fresh. So many people reach critical points in their lives where they have made mistakes, taken the wrong path, done wrong. The natural, acceptable thing to do is to declare that you are starting over, forgetting the past and moving forward. Can’t do it… Your past stays with you. It is your emotional baggage, your battle scars. How you carry the baggage, how you care for the scars will determine what you do with your life moving forward. What do you think?  Let me know...

My friend Dr Josh is very wise indeed. And whether he knows it or not, as his Rabbi, I am happy to underline the immense importance of this idea from a biblical perspective. As many know, the early Israelites used to offer sacrifices and on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year, the High Priest would do something very interesting indeed to effect atonement on behalf of all the people. Two goats would be brought before the High Priest and lots would be drawn to see which of these two goats would be offered as a sacrifice to God for the purpose of expiation of sin. Interestingly enough, the goat upon which the lot would fall would be offered to God as a sacrifice, free of the blemishes of the sin of the Israelites. The High Priest would then symbolically lay the weight of the sins of the people upon the other goat's shoulders and it would be sent off into the wilderness. It was not killed, it was just allowed to roam the wilderness. Why wasn't it killed? Why was the one first goat, free of sin, offered as a sacrifice? It would seem that it is because, only pure motivation can move us towards real substantive change, a real desire to be forgiven combined with a willingness to see ourselves free of blinders. When we are truly ready to seek forgiveness, our efforts are must be borne out of a sincere desire to change, to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Nonetheless, our sins are not washed away, they are not burnt on the altar, they are forever to wander through the wilderness of our minds. If we allow them to do that, then the memory of our sins and their impact will serve as lifelong catapults to change as they constantly remind us to look beyond our own narrow self interests and remember how we caused a great deal of hurt to others in the past.
